Baby Squirrel Out of The Nest.....

I have a "bit" of an attitude toward squirrels... they are certainly a nuisance and can cause damage... and they steal my tomatoes!!!

This little guy caught our attention, as he was much smaller than the adult squirrels... and though he is a rodent, he was cute....

He moved quite fast, but seemed a bit unsure of himself. We stood out there and watched him.

We have too many squirrels and they are such pests. Our squirrels get to be about 18" long or so. I read that squirrels range in size from 5" adults (African Pygmy Squirrel) all the way to almost 3 FEET long!!!! (Indian Giant)  Wow, that's a big squirrel and I am very glad we don't have those here. I didn't realize there were any squirrels that big....and they can jump 20 feet.

Our little guy was much smaller.... and not of the same kind, thankfully.

He zipped up the tree and down it... then back again.... he had originally come from the pines, which is where we think the nest was.... and it seemed that he wasn't sure where to go on the Birch tree.  He was extremely hyper, taking little tiny jumps and almost falling sometimes... then running some more.

This was one of his quieter moments... watching us watch him. He didn't stay like this long... and then he was back to racing here and there... taking little jumps... then more running.

The first (and last) picture on this page.... reminds me of a koala bear except for the head. Strange and interesting.

  1. I love squirrels! We have several on our acre and I love watching them run and play and do whatever it is that squirrels do. Thank you for sharing these photos :)

    1. I'm glad you enjoy them... they are fun to watch and photograph, but I admit, I get tired of them here in the city - especially when they steal my tomatoes. :) Thank you for visiting.

  2. We don't have squirrels in Australia and the koalas are hard to find in the wild but we have bush not far from us and you can occasionally find them there. We did see one in town one night crossing the road and we helped stop the traffic for him. Squirrels look really cute but I can imagine the pest they can be. Thanks for linking up at Good Morning Mondays. Blessins

  3. We have tons of squirrels here and yes, sometimes they can be annoying. I do not have a green thumb so they aren't stealing my tomatoes, but they are always scaring me, jumping out and running! That one is cute though! :)

    1. He is cute... but when he is grown, he will be one of those annoying pests. sigh. They can be fun to watch... but I wouldn't like to be startled by them either. :)

  4. I have to remind myself that squirrels are rodents with fuzzy tails. They may seem cute but they are rodents!

  6. I never realised squirrels were so cute. We get cute possums in Australia though, not like those nasty possums I've seen turtle man.

  7. Yeah, they can be a nuisance, but they're also so much fun to watch. They have great antics, and you have shared great photos. Thanks for sharing for http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2015/02/off-of-saint-maarten.html

  8. Squirrels are fun to watch, I agree, but, oh my, what they can do to a bird feeder!!

    1. Yes, they can eat WAY more than their share... and chase the birds away. We don't feed the birds here now, but I get frustrated with them for different reasons. :)

  9. Hi: We have squirrels too. They can scare me sometimes. Thanks for visiting Tea Cup Tuesday. Blessings, Martha

    1. I think we have enough people.... mainly kids... around and that keeps them from being too bold with me, but they would scare me too if they weren't so skittish.

  10. I have a little guy in my yard.. I live in the high desert of Calif...I think he is in hibernation now, although the temps are in the 70's most of the time! I don't know why he suddenly stopped coming by. I have nuts and sunflower seeds for him! I hope he comes back...just him, not the whole family! I dont' want them in the attic etc or other damage they are famous for! But it is fun to watch him...he literally climbed up the metal shepards hooks I have bird seed feeders hanging from to eat the bird seed. I put a lower hanging tray thing for him...and he started eating there, but then disappeared! Visiting from Enchanting Rose linky!

    1. I agree - I don't want to be too close to them. When we were watching this guy in the tree, we were a bit concerned he might fall on us, so we stayed back a bit.

  14. Awwww, so cute! We have a few neighborhood squirrels that mess around with the bird feeders, but that's the extent of their damage. If I leave out some corn cobs for them, then they leave the feeders alone.

    1. That's good... I'm glad they don't do damage for you... I have teeth marks in my plastic patio benches... and have to chase them away from Christmas lights when we have those up, .... AND they steal my tomatoes!! :) But they are cute and fun to watch.

  15. Eeee! Such a cute baby squirrel. Yes, they are such nuisances. They are always digging up the bulb flowers. We buried mess above the bulbs and they dug up the mesh! Sigh. But you're right, they are awfully fun to watch. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I didn't realize they would also dig up the mesh! I gave up on trying to grow tulips, since they dug up about 2 dozen bulbs and I didn't want to just get more of them to feed the squirrels. Recently, I did have a couple of tulips come up, so they missed a couple.... it was a nice surprise. :)

  16. Awww... he is so cute! When I was a child I rescued a striped squirrel and kept him for a pet for quite a while. He liked to sleep upside down in my shirt :) Anyway, after he was healed we let him go back into nature. Thanks for sharing at ROI.

    1. Good for you... fixing it so they couldn't make the mess again! :) Now, if I could just figure out how to keep them from chewing the patio furniture, digging the bulbs, chewing Christmas lights... and stealing my tomatoes. sigh. :)

  20. I love squirrels! Many people complain about squirrels eating the bird food but I feed the squirrels and birds together..I put food in terracotta saucers and they eat next to each with no problems. Ive also raised orphaned baby squirrels until they they ready to be returned to the wild. It was heart warming, very sweet creatures.

  24. Squeee!!! It's so cute! My dad found a nest of baby squirrels in a car that was towed back to his shop to be repaired. One of the workers there took them home and raised them. They were just like pets for a while - going outside in the morning, then coming inside to eat and snuggled when he got home. One day they decided it was time to head out on their own though, and they haven't been seen since. It was still such a great experience for everyone though.
