Feeling Sympathy For Farmer McGregor...

The story of Peter Rabbit is a cute children's story... and reading it helps us to have great sympathy for poor Peter Rabbit as he runs for his life from Mr. McGregor... and we are so glad he escapes from the "mean" Farmer McGregor.

Well.... now that I have my own garden... those cute little rabbits can sure be pesky.... and I confess that I am feeling more and more sympathy for Farmer McGregor!

Yes, this little guy is cute... such a round little guy... and he is curious as he sniffs here and there...

So much to explore... so many good things to check out... or eat.

By the way, to give you an idea of how little this bunny is.... I just went out and measured that stepping stone... it is 12" in diameter, so that little bunny really is little. :)

Yes, the little one really is cute....

He paused and hid in the shade of a planting pot....

...then he went back to snacking....

Here's another one of this cute little bunny's relatives...  you can tell this big rabbit has his eye on SOMETHING... and that something is IN my garden.... *sigh*

Yes, I can certainly sympathize with Mr. McGregor as he protects his garden.

I hope you have a great week. :)

  1. What a cute post! Aww...the poor, little guys! LOL! I know they must be pesky, if you are feeling sympathy for Mr. McGregor!!! I love the pictures the little creatures provided. :)

    1. Years ago, I NEVER would have thought I could EVER feel sorry for that "mean" Mr. McGregor... funny how we change. :) I do enjoy the cute little bunnies though and taking their pictures.... and even the big one on his hind legs. :)

  2. Very cute. You can rabbit proof your garden. :) This is a neat article: http://www.gardeners.com/how-to/rabbit-control-in-the-garden/5465.html Search on google "rabbit proof garden." All kinds of tip articles show up. I love rabbits, but I wouldn't want them messing up my hard work either. ;)

    1. I will have to check out the rabbit proofing... I have looked at some ideas, but with our city garden and all of the many raised beds and in ground beds, it has seemed too overwhelming to try their ideas. My best thing, so far, has been to make a homemade bunny repellant and shake it on the plants... needs to be replaced after each rain and it only keeps them from nibbling on that spot. Thank you for visiting. :)

  3. Haha. Well, I too can feel for poor Mr. MacGregor. We had many Peter Rabbits around here, and our German Shepherd would dispatch them asap. Of course, there were always those who escaped, but those little rascals became big and fat rascals off our poor garden - until we fenced it in with chicken wire. At last we have an (almost) bunny proof garden. I enjoyed your title and great photos! :-)

    1. It is quite the dilemma.... enjoy those cute little bunnies.... or keep the garden food for ourselves. Hmm... they are hard to get rid of also... I am finding that this year, they aren't even afraid of us... if we chase them, they run a few feet, then turn to look at us while they eat. They are getting WAY too comfortable here. :) Thank you for visiting - it was so nice to have you. :)

  5. How absolutely precious, my dear! We have a sweet little rabbit that lives by the shed and every morning he comes down near the house and lays under the trampoline....he makes me smile :) Thanks for sharing with Roses of Inspiration.

    1. Thank you... I have smiled at "my" bunnies too... but so far, I think we are seeing about 3 big ones and 2 little ones... and I wonder how many are hiding. They are funny and cute... but they seem to be taking over... and the numbers are increasing steadily. Oh dear!!!

  6. You and me both!! I'm always glad when the baby bunnies are too big, at last, to fit through the chain link fencing we use. We're almost there! The peas are finally able to grow!

    1. They do like those peas... and beans... and beets.... the funny thing is that I have never had trouble with them eating the carrots... and that seems like such a stereotype for them. :)

  7. Every year, I have the love/hate relationship with the rabbits. I'm always spraying with some kind of rabbit repellent, but they always manage to snack on something...........I would never hurt a living creature, but I don't feel bad when natural predation takes it's course. Don't mind the foxes, coyotes and hawks visiting my yard!

    1. I have seen a hawk flying over and thought it would be nice if he helped us out here, but then I see those tiny bunnies and feel guilty. :) Maybe he can wait until they are big and then help us out. The rabbits sure do a lot of damage... and they are so comfortable here... too much so.

  8. Adorable! No bunnies here, just pesky squirrels and they do a lot of damage too! It is part of having a garden I guess!

    1. So true! I don't begrudge them the clover in the yard... they can enjoy it all they want, but they don't stop nibbling on just that. :)

  10. While I don't have bunnies in my garden, I do have gophers, and last year I had turkeys and deer. I tried several different things and with all of them combined, they seemed to work. One thing that worked really well was a sound barrier. I don't know if you have dogs or not, but it will bother them, if you do, and they won't come in your garden either. I got it from Ace Hardware. It puts out a high pitched sound that only animals can hear, and hurts their ears so they leave. I placed this at the entrance to my garden. The other thing I tried that really works awesome with both animals and bugs is sulfur! If you will take and sprinkle sulfur (which you can buy in a big bag at your local nursery or garden center), around the perimeter of your garden area, or around the plants that they seem to particularly enjoy, you will find that they won't come back. Sulfur does have a strong smell, but it takes care of bugs and animals alike. I have decided I like the smell of sulfur since I don't have to deal animal or bug problems hardly at all anymore! I can certainly understand your difficult dilemma. One other solution might be to set up a trap, and catch them, and take them to a nearby forest. Have a blessed and wonderful day! :)

    1. Good ideas on the sound barrier and sulfur.... we can't trap and release them... it is illegal here... we CAN trap and kill them, from what I understand, but it would be hard to kill cute little bunnies.. and the kids would be very unhappy. (I would have a hard time w/ it also. :) Thank you. :)

  11. What a little cutie, but I'm sure the garden "snack bar" can get frustrating. I have a fence around my yard (good thing, since we back up to forest), but in our old house everything was eaten by deer and elk. Thanks for linking up at the Weekend Blog Hop at My Flagstaff Home!

    1. Deer and elk would be an even bigger challenge than rabbits... I am thankful we don't have those to deal with. yes, I would like to close the "snack bar"! :)

  12. I remember my dad having the same problem a few years back. He has some sort of electric fencing now which I think helps but they are determined little fellas! Good luck!

  16. Ha ha.. you are so comical. I can relate in a way, though, as deer are the scavengers here. They are lovely to look at and a gentle creature but when a lot of hard work and money is spent and it is eaten up by them.... well... I,too, have sympathy for Mr. McGregor!!

    1. Fun comment... yes, deer would be even worse... and they are beautiful, but both are threats to the family's food supply.... beautiful, but still a threat. For now, we are existing together w/ just chasing them now and then.

  18. I too love to see the rabbits until they get in our garden! I have tried planting marigolds (someone told me that it helped). Last year I put cat hair in a nylon and tied them around the garden. Not for sure if any helped but we didn't have too much damage. I love the pictures! You were able to capture the rabbit perfect.

  21. Our daughter adores bunnies. . . but we have a large garden. Fortunately for our garden (and unfortunately for our daughter) our outside cats are skilled hunters. We seem to have more bunnies than usual this summer, and we have rescued several (literally) from the jaws of our feline friends.

  22. Bunnies are SO cute and can be so destructive. Lucky for us, our dogs keep pretty good patrol over our back yard. I get to see them from time to time in the front yard though but there they can't do much damage. Sweet photos.

    1. Thank you... we don't have pets, just lots of activity in our yard from our family (7 of us who live here!) and visitors.... but the bunnies and squirrels and birds seem to feel right at home. I love seeing them, but not the evidence of what they have eaten. :)

  23. I have joked that my garden bunny is welcome as long as he is content to munch on grass and weeds and so far that's been the case. I have tons of herbs in almost every area and I don't think they care for them, so that must help. Your photos are wonderful--thanks for sharing @Vintage Charm!

    1. Thank you... I wish mine were content with grass and weeds. sigh. These silly rabbits LOVE my peppers... and eat them down to the soil. They ate the bell peppers and the jalapeno... and even nibbled on the habenero! This year I have waited and I bought TALL pepper plants hoping they will not be decimated by the bunnies! :) We'll see.
